A FAMILY AFFAIR 150 150 admin

“Love one another and you will be happy.  It’s as simple and as difficult as that.” – Michael Leuning

Orchids and giant cloches make a perfect welcome to a party #dlrhein

I love the message which welcomes you into this home, “Shed your worries, you’re home.”  There is something so profound in those 5 words and I think it should apply to guests just as it does to the home dwellers.  After completing the living room and dining room of this Pasadena abode, we came over to do some extra touches in preparation for pre- wedding party for our client’s brother.  The front door is the first thing people see, so we wanted to jazz it up a bit.  Over sized cloches contain fresh orchids and reindeer moss.  Simple and effortless while making a grand statement that is cost effective.  read more

SEXY SALLE A MANGER 150 150 admin

“The dining room in my old house was truly magnificent, but by far the worst room for conversation.  I’d get up from the table, a very long table, and somebody would always say, ‘Paul, I never got to talk to you.” – Paul Lynde

BEFORE | Previous owners' dining room

The dining room pictured above belonged to the previous home owners.  When our fab client moved in, she immediately took it from early colonial to Hollywood Glamour.  You loved how her living room transformed, feast your eyes on  this chic Salle a Manger!  read more

VINTAGE VAGABOND 150 150 admin

“Our culture’s obsession with vintage objects has rendered us unable to separate history from nostalgia. People want heart.  They want a chaser of emotion with their aesthetics.” – Sloane Crosley

These treasures are one of a kind and guarantee to spark interest in the home and conversation with guests. #hunting #vintage #treasures #antiques #design #interiors #shelfdecor | @D.L. Rhein

We are happy to announce the launch of our curated Vintage section now available through our online store.

Vintage Art

“When I am finishing a picture, I hold some God-made object up to it- a rock, a flower, the branch of a tree or my hand – as a final test.  If the painting stands up beside a thing man cannot make, the painting is authentic.  If there’s a clash between the two, it’s bad art.” – Marc Chagall

Vintage Art painted on glass | D.L. Rhein

My current obsession is vintage art.  Oil paintings, pastels, watercolors, needle points, you name it.  It all started when I was trying to find art to hang in clients’ homes, without breaking the bank.  Most of what you find in a gallery  is thousands of dollars, if you’re lucky.  I began to sharpen my eyes and things would speak to me as I was out and about hunting and gathering.  The richness of color coupled with interesting scenes made me start looking outside of the box in terms of wall decor.

It has almost become a contest between Jess and I, sending pictures back and forth whenever we spot a fantastic piece. We have acquired quite a collection the last few months, and it triggered a mini makeover in the back of our design studio.  Not only can a lot of the art now be seen by customers, it is breathing new inspiration into our work each day as we are surrounded by our vintage gallery.

Found Art

While we would all love to buy a Van Gogh, we at D.L. are just not quite there.  In the meantime, we are on the hunt for found art: at flea markets, estate sales, and the like.  We are sharing some of our favorite recently acquired vintage art with you.  Most of the frames will be zhushed, with gold leaf or paint, but the one above we bought mainly because of the frame.  It is from the 1880’s and spectacular in its antiquity.  We envision this painting above a client’s fireplace or at the end of a hallway, creating somewhat of a haunted feel.

This beach scene would look beautiful above a fireplace too.  Do you notice the size of the signature?  Famous painters are, well, famous for signing their names illegibly and as small as possible.  A novice artist is proud of his/her accomplishment and wants the world to know who he/she is!

This painting would bring gorgeous vibrant color to a room lacking it.  Town scenes and cityscapes are adored at D.L. Rhein now and always, as visible in both our store windows, which feature Brooklyn, Amsterdam (we think- what about you?), and Paris.

This guy would look fabulous in a man’s office or a den.  The color is so vibrant in person, a gorgeous vintage blue.

We have a rotating collection of vintage art at D.L, and we can’t wait to see what we find on the hunt next!  Til then…
