“Sometimes the beauty is easy.  Sometimes you don’t have to try at all.  Sometimes you can hear the wind blow in a handshake.  Sometimes there’s poetry written right on the bathroom wall.” – Ani DiFranco

We love a good challenge and this guest bathroom was no exception.  How do we keep the existing structure, and make the pink and green marble work in a modern update?!  Use the color as our inspiration and find just the right match to make an already ornate room, go totally over the top.  Reminiscent of one of the bathrooms in the Greystone Mansion, we wanted to honor the vintage charm by bringing it up to date with new accents.  With the foyer and game loft/lounge under our belt, we went to some of our favorite vendors to look for textiles and wall coverings to make this room sing.  read more

“We didn’t have a TV in the living room and all my friends thought we were kind of weird. When they’d come over, my mom wanted to talk to them about current events.”
– Eliza Dushku

Perfect Living Room | All custom and vintage by D.L. Rhein #dlrhein

Remember that room in your house growing up that was “off limits” or “for company only?”  This laid back family wanted anything but that.  With a comfy family room already set up for Movie Night and Sports Games, the lady of the house wanted a room where she could entertain her friends without feeling stuffy.  With nothing but a console in this room, we couldn’t wait to start hunting for and creating its contents.  A sofa and chairs were created in Belgian Linen, custom pewter silk drapes hang from a modern valance.  Clean lined yet eclectic, the perfect room was becoming perfectly layered.  read more

“There is only one difference between a long life and a good dinner: that, in dinner, the sweets come last.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

They always say, don’t mix business with family.  Well, that is impossible since my parent’s have been my biggest fans since I started my business many moons ago!  I have worked on things in their home in the past, but this project was extra special as it involved something that belonged to my Grandmother.  This stunning burled wood table and chairs was as pristine as could be and looked as though it had never been used.  That Depression era generation took care of their belongings in a different way as things weren’t disposable to them as they are to us today.  When you bought something, you better make it last…FOREVER.  That being said, all these chairs needed was a fabric facelift and the results took years off their face.  read more

“A designer knows when he has reached perfection not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” – Antione de Sainte-Exupery

Once we started the first phase of our studio makeover, we couldn’t help but continue into the front of our retail store.  Now that we had turned the front half of our studio into a shop-able design space, we decided to showcase some of our interior design into the retail portion as well.  The results have been tremendous!  We have gained several new interior clients, increased our retail space and sales, and have started quickly moving our one of a kind vintage pieces.  Think of that!  Instead of having so many of our treasures pushed onto shelves, or stored in my garage, we can now showcase furniture and home accessories in vignettes and change things up each time we sell a piece of re-invented furniture.  read more

“The dining room in my old house was magnificent, but by far the worst room for conversation.  I’d get up from the table, a very long table, and somebody would always say, Paul, I never got to talk to you.” – Paul Lynde

A Dining Room Makeover | D.L. Rhein

A dining room is a place where family and friends gather to break bread and talk about anything from the current political news to what a child did at school that day.  For a young family,  it should be a place of beauty, but comfortable enough to want to sit back, relax and enjoy the plat du jour over great conversation.  Turning a beige room white (Benjamin Moore’s Chantilly Lace) from floor to ceiling, and removing the venetian plaster and fleur de lys, was the logical first step to turn a dreary room bright.  read more
