“The living room should be a place where we feel totally at ease – temple of the soul.” – Terence Conran

Sometimes you meet someone and you just connect right away.  It can be their persona, style, or a mutual appreciation of something.  This was the case when I first met my client who I now call  friend.  With her impeccable eye for detail and my vintage furniture refurbs, this room was a stunning and symbiotic collaboration.  Reminiscent of my old house when my kids were babies, filled with neutrals and a pop of red,  I couldn’t wait to see this room unfold into a place both modern and chic.  read more

“There are certain parts of the home that I think embellishment feels cozy and inviting.  Then there are other environments, for example, the living room, where I don’t have a ton of items on the table.” – Aerin Lauder

BEFORE | LIVING ROOM

Primary colors were no longer a primary desire in this home!  After some updates and zhushing to their formal den, the desire to go neutral spilled over into this sunny room leading outside to their beautiful backyard oasis.  Now that the kids aren’t little anymore, this family wanted their home to be a relaxed and zen filled environment, welcoming them and their guests to kick back and unwind.

Belgian Linen Custom Sectional | Vintage Marble Coffee Table | Silk Rug | #dlrhein #interiordesign

Double the Chaises, double the fun! We bid adieu to the old blue sofa, and bienvenue the fresh new custom sectional in Belgian linen.  How about those soothing walls? Pebble Beach by Benjamin Moore completely transformed the vibe of this room with a stroke of a brush.  A hand woven rug made of silk remnants is as pretty as it is soft and adds a different texture.

Fresh Flowers are a must, and these purple thistles couldn’t be more perfect if they tried.

Vintage Runner turned into Pillows | Refinished Marble Coffee Table | #dlrhein #interiordesign

The base of this vintage coffee table went from off white to grey pulling out the beautiful veins from the marble.  Our client fell in love with this vintage indigo printed runner while we were rummaging through my box of favorite things in my studio.  One of a kind and totally unique, this textile was given new life when turned into plump pillows.   I love that we saved the tassel trim and put it on two of the pillows for a playful touch.

An area that was once an afterthought is now a reading nook with this handsome vintage chair and ottoman reupholstered in navy velvet with apple green piping for a burst of contrast.  A carved wood pedestal from another room becomes the perfect side table for a glass of ice tea on a beautiful Cali afternoon.  Calm, cool and collected…OMMMMMMMM.

BEFORE | LIVING ROOM

An interesting thing happens when families transition from having little kids who are becoming young adults and they often start to look at their homes differently.   A sunny ranch nestled in the Pacific Palisades had a vast room waiting to be filled and inspired our clients to move away from the old and begin with the new (reinvented vintage).   The slip covered sofa was donated making room for some fab new chairs and a game table for a family that loves to play together.

I flipped when I found this ’70’s cane and wood set and couldn’t wait to refinish it for the right client.  Piped linen seats and a grey stain really brought out the beautiful grain of the wood.  Bring on the games!

BEFORE | FRONT ENTRY

The entrance to a home is the first thing people see, including the homeowner.  It should be an area to take pause and relish in before making your way into other rooms.  Our clients were ready to makeover their newly acquired home as it hadn’t been touched in several decades.  What better place to start then in the heart of the home!  read more

A Garage Demo turned into the ultimate guest cottage | @D.L. Rhein

BEFORE | GARAGE DEMO AND RE PURPOSING

What do you do with an old garage turned dumping ground for stuff no one is using anymore? Turn it into a fabulous Guest House!   Nothing more than a blank canvas, the possibilities were endless and we killed two birds with one stone.  This young couple was desperate for a comfortable place to host guests as they are expecting a baby and their parents were planning some extended stays.  The man of the house was begging for a place to watch sports with his friends so this new suite would serve as a sophisticated spin on a “man cave.”  Modern and clean, yet incredibly cozy, everyone was happy and no one had to compromise style for function.  read more
