“Il n’y a que deux endroits au monde ou l’on puisse vivre heureux: chez soi et a Paris.”

There are only two places in the world where we can live happy: at home and in Paris.   – Ernest Hemingway

Find peace and comfort in a simple master bedroom | D.L. Rhein

After completing the bottom level of one of my favorite clients homes, I was ecstatic when she said she was anxious to re-decorate her master bedroom.   A huge fan of French antiques and  industrial chic, re-purposed metal furniture and oxidized glass, I wondered what she would be open to in her bedroom.   She decided on Lilac and my brain started churning.  Romantic, peaceful, and relaxing, it  is the perfect color for a place to retire in solitude after a day jam packed with three young children.  To give it a little punch, we added some pops of blue to break up the monochromatic scheme, just a little bit.  We met to discuss the room right before my trip to Paris.  With a shared love of the city, and a color palate in hand, I couldn’t wait to get inspired and search for one of a kinds!

A custom bench in Peter Dunham’s  Kashmir Paisley makes a perfect spot for breakfast in bed.  While strolling in Paris, we came upon a home decor boutique specializing in linens.  I spotted a purple damask hand painted table runner.  It was so magnificent, I bought it immediately knowing that I would create two Euro pillows out of it for the freshly made over bed.  I love creating things out of unexpected materials, and it ensures a one of a kind custom piece for the client.

These two items make my heart sing.  The doors came from a Parisian flat and we added beveled mirror to fit the frame.  The metal dresser is a piece I would kill to find more of.  A 1920’s metal dresser that I snatched up from an antique show this summer.  The metal is so unique, and was the perfect accent to a room once filled with brown and green wood.  In the 20’s, furniture was made out of metal so it would withstand termites. They would then paint the metal to look like wood.  This piece had been stripped down to the original metal finish, something you rarely see and therefore making it extremely unique.

A matching office off of the master bedroom - heaven! | D.L. Rhein

The bedroom’s living room area  was needing some TLC.  We painted out the back of the built in shelves which incorporates lilac, without overpowering the room.  We made a hand shelled mirror out of purple clams to sit above the mantle.  White coral, mother of pearl frames, and pierced Moroccan urns are crisp against the painted wall and white shelves.  A navy and white chevron throw for cuddling up with the kids for bedtime stories.  The green table was refinished and  anchored with lilac linen tufted chairs.

A woven aluminum ottoman doubles as a coffee table as well additional hidden storage.  A small antique Turkish rug from our trip to Paris was the perfect size and colors for this space.  DL Rhein embroidered pillows in Navy further incorporate the touches of blue around the room.

Art + Detail makes a home office more than an office | D.L. RheinA vintage oil painting that I bought with this client in mind, that she fell in love with.  As an added bonus, it turns out the artist was an acclaimed water color artist in California in the seventies.

Believe it or not, this is the same client whose living room had been completed right before this room, and they are going to be moving in the new year.  Can’t wait to start their next domicile…
