“I always feel that I have two duties to perform with a parting guest: One, to see that he doesn’t forget anything that is his; the other, to see that he doesn’t take anything that is mine.” – Alfred North Whitehead

A Garage Demo turned into the ultimate guest cottage | @D.L. Rhein

What do you do with an old garage turned dumping ground for stuff no one is using anymore? Turn it into a fabulous Guest House!   Nothing more than a blank canvas, the possibilities were endless and we killed two birds with one stone.  This young couple was desperate for a comfortable place to host guests as they are expecting a baby and their parents were planning some extended stays.  The man of the house was begging for a place to watch sports with his friends so this new suite would serve as a sophisticated spin on a “man cave.”  Modern and clean, yet incredibly cozy, everyone was happy and no one had to compromise style for function.

Custom wood paneling covers the Murphy Bed hidden in the wall making this a room a fab and funky den when guests are gone and a bedroom suite when they are staying over.  A black hide rug from Ikea warms up the concrete floors.  An antique cart serves as a coffee table and the perfect place to play backgammon on this chic laquered set by Jonathan Adler.

Beveled glass not only dresses up doors, but creates reflection and the illusion of a larger room.  A well disguised Murphy bed pulls down when guests are ready to crash.

Fifty shades of grey are too many!  Here are four of our absolute favorites for walls from Benjamin Moore.

I found these funky triangle tables when I was hunting for something else.  The best things often appear when you aren’t even looking and I knew these would work in an unconventional space.  They hugged the couch perfectly and didn’t interrupt the flow of the room.  The concrete floors get new life when polished and sealed in a clear varnish.

This over sized crescent is fresh and tailored in Belgian linen with a single row of tufted buttons along the back.

Bye bye garage doors, hello window pane french doors!  Now guests have a stunning view to the back yard and the homeowners can see into their new hide away when playing with their newest addition to the family.  Outdoor lighting is important too, but doesn’t always have to make a grand statement.  Restoration Hardware’s  Vintage Barn Sconce in weathered zinc is a simple, utilitarian choice.  The only problem this couple will have with this new home oasis, is getting their guests to leave.  Stay tuned for the addition of a spa bathroom we built onto this suite later this week.
