“You complete me.”  You know, I never quite believed that philosophy when it comes to people.  Everyone needs to complete him/herself, BUT when it comes to turkey… cranberry completes me.

Giving Thanks

Giving Thanks 150 150 admin

Thanksgiving is one of my very favorite holidays.  I love how it includes all people: there is no religion, race, denomination, sex (male or female, married or single), no social status, army service or even citizenship required to celebrate.  Back when I had my manufacturing business downtown, we would have a Thanksgiving lunch.  The table setting would not be so elegant; maybe we would even use paper plates (heaven to Betsy), but the spirit was right.  Some girls would bring tamales, and we get a big hunk of turkey, along with some hummus (!) from The Grill Table.  It was a party!

You can even be a vegetarian and partake in Thanksgiving’s glorious side dishes (more turkey for me).  In fact, my favorite dish at the table is stuffing.  Arguably (and I would love to hear your arguments- they  wet my appetite), my mom’s stuffing is the best.  She would make it like she made everything else, the old-fashion way, bread celery, carrots, onions… the same way every time…  I would walk into her house, and the smell of brown sugar crackling on yams would hit my nose.  Mmm… isn’t it funny how smells take you back?  My mom and her two sisters would be a little competition-happy with their pie-making, which would mean one thing: amazing pies for us to eat!

A giving tree is a great idea for the Thanksgiving, or any holiday, table: have everyone write something they’re grateful for, and hang the cards from a decorative tree.

I am most thankful for the health of my family…

And the little voices in my head… I mean house…

May your table be beautiful, your heart full of thanks, and your house filled with happy voices…

Ah, The Beverly Hills Hotel… there’s no place like it.  Where else can you say Katharine Hepburn drove into the pool and Howard Hughes got roast beef sandwiches delivered to his… tree?  No place on Earth!  A week ago, we were honored to be a part of the John Wayne Cancer Institute’s benefit at the celebrated hotel.  The JWCI has been at the forefront of cancer research since its founding, in 1981.  It was formed by the Wayne family in memory of John Wayne, who died of stomach cancer.  John Wayne himself stayed at the Pink Palace: I wouldn’t be surprised to hear he rode up on a horse through the pink pillars.
