Golden orange like the Indian sun, turmeric has been a staple in the Eastern diet for centuries.  A beautiful color and savory scent, this magical spice is more than just a pretty pigment.  A natural remedy, filled with amazing healing properties, turmeric is one of the best things for your body.   I have always been a healthy eater, but I became hyper aware of everything I put in my body once I was diagnosed with breast cancer last year.  How will my body metabolize this, break it down (or not), what will it do to aid my body to prevent bad cells from metathesizing?  Studies have shown that turmeric contains curcumin, which helps stave off cancer due to its anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune stimulating benefits.  Curcumin was found to increase apoptosis, a type of programmed cell death essential for stopping the proliferation of cancer cells.  In addition to the medication I have to take, I am supplementing my body with any and every natural ingredient possible to help my body continue to heal and keep it that way going forward.  Turmeric has become one of the tops on my list and I incorporate it into the foods I prepare for my family.  read more

It’s funny how when a new year begins, a lot of  people say “Thank goodness that year is over. ”  We get a fresh start and get to make resolutions anew and put anything unsavory behind us. I have to say that 2015 was one of the best years of my life.  It was an amazing year of spiritual growth,  self reflection, health and lifestyle choices, and a great expansion within my business.  I want to start by saying thank you to everyone in my immediate and extended world for giving me the best year of my life. You supported me, my business, and my blog.  You gave me love in more ways than I can ever express through messages, visits, food, gifts, and unwavering support physically and mentally.  A very special thank you to Jess, my right hand, who held up this business in every way without a glitch for the last seven months.  Knowing it was in good hands and that I didn’t have to stress about that made a huge difference in helping me get to focus on healing and creativity.  2015 was a year in which we documented a lot of our design projects, before and afters, “the work”.  Reflecting on last year and beginning a new one, I can say that I have some of the most amazing clients that I have had to date in my career.  I am grateful to you all for trusting my vision, allowing me to create beautiful and harmonious spaces for your homes and offices, and for becoming my friends, not just clients.   read more

If these pages could talk…worn spine, cover stained with hard work and love, this cook book evokes memories each time I pull it out for Jewish holidays.  Love and Knishes, a beloved favorite in my family, a gift to my mother when my parents were newlyweds.  Filled with great recipes, none greater than the recipe for potato latkes from scratch.  Friends and family will all agree, no one makes a better latke than my mother Linda.  So good in fact, we asked her for a “test run” before Hannukah begins on Sunday so that we may share their golden goodness with all of you.  read more

Chopped Salad Ingredients a la La Scala | D.L. RHEIN

I have always loved a good salad.  And by good, it can be a simple mixed greens with a touch of vinaigrette, as long as the ingredients are fresh.  It’s that element of crunch whether it be the lettuce, roasted nuts, or my favorite crunchies for Chinese Chicken Salad at Feast from the East.  Since my childhood, my absolute favorite go-to meal when I don’t want to think about cooking, is the Original Chopped Salad from La Scala. Founded in 1956, Chef Jean Leon was the first Los Angeles Italian restauranteur to serve white truffles (drool) and make his own pasta (need I say more?).  Memories still flood back of going to La Scala with my parents and feeling so grown up, while enjoying my favorite meal.  This yummy salad is full of watery vegetables – you can never have enough H2O, and chock full of protein and calcium from the chick peas and cheese.  Best part is, you can put this together on the fly for a family dinner or a crowd pleasing favorite when you need a dish to bring for sharing at a party.  The leftovers make a perfect lunch the next day…  read more

I’ve got to be honest, I crave healthy food.   Long before my breast cancer diagnosis, fresh wholesome ingredients have always been a staple in my life.  My husband still loves to tell people about our trip to Venezuala before we got engaged when we were in the jungle, folks ate whatever was available,  ALL I wanted was a green salad.  That being said, sometimes we get lazy.  Sometimes after working and or running around all day and trying to juggle the family’s schedule, we just need to do what is “easy. ”  You’re exhausted and the thought of cooking is too overwhelming to tackle.  We’ve ALL been there.  But the more I live and learn, the more I realize the things that are best for us, are actually the easiest to prepare.  I have been experimenting with different ingredients each week to come up with recipes that are anti oxidant rich, and super delicious.   This salad takes all of 5 minutes to make, and my youngest requests the leftovers to take to school for lunch.  It’s still crunchy the next day!  read more
