“I can remember dancing around the living room with my two sisters to the music of Paganini and Mozart. I can still remember my dad combing the newspaper, circling all the free concerts in town, and on the weekends, we would go as a family.”

BEFORE | LIVING ROOM

It takes a keen eye and a creative brain to be able to look into the future and imagine how something so far from your taste can go from drab to fab. When our clients first pulled up to an Historic Brick Georgian, they were certain this would not be the home for them.  Once they walked through it they realized it was exactly what they were looking for.  These free spirits were truly able to envision the possibilities of transformation and trust that we would deliver their dream home after  working with them on past projects.   A living room straight out of Mt. Vernon was beckoning to be brought into the 21st century…  read more

“I try to greet my friends with a drink in my hand, a warm smile on my face, and great music in the background, because that’s what gets a dinner party off to a fun start.”
– Ina Garten

PASADENA - DINING ROOM - BEFORE

BEFORE – DINING ROOM

Coming out of the dark!  The previous owners dining room was gloomy even on a sunny day.  With grey walls and heavy drapes, coupled with a tight configuration of large furniture, the space felt cramped and very dated.  When we sat down to plan this room, the wheels started churning on how to elongate and brighten the space so it could be filled with curated treasures.

Hard to believe this is the same room!  By placing the new dining table vertical instead of horizontal we were able to double the space allowing for plenty of storage and surface areas for serving.  Painting the walls all white from top to bottom makes the furniture and art work pop and adds to the illusion of the room being bigger than it actually is.

This hutch tho!  I found this antique European beauty a year before our clients moved in and knew it would be the perfect piece to anchor the dining room.  In amazing condition with hand carved details stained in black, you know those lion heads put me into a frenzy.

I have a serious love for vintage throne chairs and snatch them up as soon as I find one on the hunt.  These beauties have different details that add to their whimsy and charm.  Stripped to their natural wood to make them less fussy, and reupholstering in Turkish silk velvet, made these eclectic chairs cohesive around a vintage farmhouse table we stained in black for a dramatic contrast.  A sisal rug adds some texture to the light wood floors leaving the furniture the stars of this room.

A pair of vintage brass lamps look good as new after some TLC and new custom shades to modernize.  Wooden troughs turned planters flank our favorite brass top decanters.  A double bistro sconce is a fun way to add height to the room.

Who loves a good bar cart?! We do, we do!  Solid brass and faux ivory are a win win combination.  Set beneath antique wallpaper renderings (we scored these from a one of a kind textile dealer), this cart is ready to rock and roll at their next party.  See what we did there? wink, wink.   Stay tuned for the next part of this Modern Vintage Domicile.

XO,
D.L.

Arden Before Bathroom 9

Once you remodel a bathroom in your house, it’s hard to not want to do it to all of them.  After two powder rooms and a master bath gutted and transformed, it was time to tackle the oldest of the lot.  With growing tweens who share a bathroom between their rooms, it was time to update and maximize the space for optimal use. After remodeling the bathroom at their beach house, we couldn’t wait to demo this bathroom in our clients gorgeous Hancock Park home.   read more

“Any time women come together with a collective intention, it’s a powerful thing. Whether it’s sitting down making a quilt, in a kitchen preparing a meal, in a club reading the same book, or around the table playing cards, when women come together with a collective intention, magic happens.” – Phylicia Rashad
